Shifting Winds Consulting is a collaborative of healthcare and academic professionals with expertise and experience in mental health counseling, palliative care and hospice, academic medicine, acute care, risk management, therapy, community health, patient safety, policy development, strategy, health advocacy, student life, business development and hospital administration. Additionally, this team has experience in higher education serving as faculty/instructors, student life personnel, online education and curriculum development as well as Deans and other senior leadership.
As a multidisciplinary team composed of physicians, therapists, advocates, risk managers, educators, university deans and former healthcare executives, some of us have been in healthcare or academics since the late 1980s, while others trained in the 2010s, bringing a unique prism and perspective of the challenges in providing healthcare or academic services and the solutions for ensuring quality and equity. Together we bring a proven track record of professional consulting with physician and hospital leaders, academic medical centers, universities and healthcare advocacy groups.
We believe we are well positioned to meet the needs of others who are trying to navigate the changing landscape of healthcare, academic medicine or higher education whether as an individual, private practice, advocacy organization, higher education institution or as an entire healthcare entity though our comprehensive assessment and advisory services tailored to the unique needs of our clients.
The foundation of healthcare has always been the doctor-patient relationship. However, healthcare has become more complex with more key stakeholders than just a single clinician and a patient. The result is a series of complex relationships and dynamics in these relationships that can not only impact the patient-clinician relationship but result in operational, business and organizational strategic challenges.
From insurance companies to multidisciplinary care teams, healthcare systems employing physicians to healthcare policy regulating how clinicians can prescribe, the dynamics of relationships in healthcare drive success and challenges. However, few practitioners or healthcare entities take the time to understand the roles each play as well as the rules that govern these relationships and then incorporate these into their strategy, policies or clinical risk management, patient safety, and quality programs.
At Shifting Winds, we believe healthcare is relationship centered. That is why we work with clients to assess the "health" of their relationships and their culture and then provide tailored services to ensure adaptability and resilience to navigate challenges and opportunities successfully.
Similar to healthcare, the foundation of academics is thought to be the faculty-student relationship. However, in academic medicine and higher education, students with a full-time course load, do not have a single educator but rather multiple instructors and numerous other relationships across career advisement, clinical practice or internships, and student life. The result is a series of complex relationships and dynamics in these relationships that can impact both the student and all the personnel working in the academic setting.
However, few academicians or leaders over higher education, take the time to understand the roles faculty/instructors, resident life and student life staff impact the university-student relationship as well as the rules that govern these relationships and then incorporate these into their strategy, policies or risk management, student safety, and quality educational programs.
